Split – History at Glance
Split, the second largest city in Croatia, situated in the beautiful Dalmatia, the sunniest area of the middle Mediterranean with 2700 hours of sunny days per year.
1700 years ago, The Roman Emperor Diocletian built the Palace to spend the last years of his life there. The Palace becomes the city of Split, with the rich and interesting history and tradition, surrounded with beautiful nature.
Today the Palace is listed as the UNESCO world heritage, remarkably preserved and still living a picturesque life. Sightseeing of the Palace is actually a travelling trough time, as all periods of history can be seen between the walls, from Roman period all the way through the middle age to modern days.
Charismatic streets and squares set amongst its walls are full of cafes and restaurants, visited by both local people and tourists. Beside magnificent architecture, Split is offering excellent cuisine and vine, many cultural events, music and theatre festivals, concerts and museums, organized all year around by the Tourist Borough of Split.
Marjan the Park Forest is a symbol above the City, and magnificent point of escape from the summer crowd. It is well known for its recreational facilities and beautiful beaches hidden under pine trees shade. Although a big city, Split is with beautiful beaches, from famous Bačvice sandy beach to stony oasis around Marjan.
